2008 McCall Winter Carnival
1/25/2008
to 2/3/2008
For over 40 years visitors have enjoyed the spectacular snow sculptures doting the streets through out the community. They come in all shapes, sizes and themes from small to tall (over 20 feet!).
In the beginning of this local tradition, residents constructed the sculptures in front of their homes. Gradually, the sculptures moved downtown where local businesses carry on the spirit of fun and festival. Snow sculpturing has developed into an event that receives national recognition, with our teams going forward to compete in international events! In addition to enjoying over many entrants around town, visitors take part in a two full weeks worth of activities.

McCall, Idaho is known as “SKI TOWN USA” for its great snow conditions, and it’s history of being the second oldest winter recreational area in Idaho. McCall has hosted several international, national and regional events over the decades. Ski Town, USA got its beginnings during the early 1920’s and 1930’s when Finnish settlers introduced not only cross country skiing to the area, but also ski jumping and alpine skiing. In 1937, the Payette Lakes Ski Club was formed and offered skiing at the “Little Ski Hill”. This began a tradition that now spans over seven decades of skiing in the McCall area. Additionally, in 1965 Ponderosa State Park was formed and has been providing Nordic ski trails for over 25 years, with over 35,000 Nordic skier visits a year.

The Blackhawk Mountain Triathlon is a fund raiser for Little Ski Hill. This year Blackhawk has agreed to be a major sponsor for the event. This will allow all proceeds from race entries to go to the Payette Lakes Ski Club. The Mountain Triathlon was started in the mid-seventies and has been run at the North Beach area of Ponderosa State Park since 1994. In years past about 200 people competed on teams or as individuals. The race is great for experienced competitors or first time triathletes.
